Understanding the Framework

The Five Pillars of Health is G.O.A.L.’s foundational framework for understanding human health and wellbeing. It brings together Nutrition, Movement, Knowledge, Mindset and Environment as five complementary perspectives through which individuals, communities and societies can be better understood.

Rather than examining health through a single discipline, the framework adopts a systems perspective, recognising that health emerges from the continuous interaction between multiple interconnected conditions.

The Five Pillars are not independent components of health. Each pillar both influences and is influenced by the others, meaning health and wellbeing emerge from the system as a whole rather than any pillar in isolation.

Why this Framework?

Health is shaped by far more than healthcare alone. It is influenced by the environments people live in, the knowledge they acquire, the choices they make, the opportunities available to them and countless interactions between these and other factors.

The Five Pillars were developed to provide a common framework for understanding these relationships. Rather than replacing existing disciplines, it offers a complementary systems perspective that helps reveal how different aspects of human life interact to shape health and wellbeing.
