Human Flourishing
The human foundation of Urban OS 2040.
↓
The Five Pillars of Health
Human Flourishing within the Urban OS Core is structured through five interconnected pillars: Nutrition, Movement, Knowledge, Mindset and Environment. Together, they provide the human lens through which the conditions of urban life are examined and developed.
Each pillar is organized into a set of urban domains representing the environments, systems and conditions through which cities shape human flourishing. These domains form the current knowledge architecture of the Human Flourishing layer and provide the foundation through which its understanding can continue to develop.
Nutrition
Nutrition examines how urban environments and systems shape people’s ability to access, afford, choose and consume adequate and nutritious food. It encompasses the availability and affordability of food, the systems through which it reaches communities, the public and commercial environments that influence food choices, and the social and cultural conditions through which eating becomes part of urban life.
6
Urban Domains
01
Food Access & Availability
How the urban environment shapes the physical availability, proximity and accessibility of nutritious food.
02
Food Affordability & Equity
How economic conditions and inequalities shape people's ability to obtain adequate and nutritious food.
03
Food Systems & Supply
How food is produced, procured, distributed and sustained across the urban food system, including its resilience to disruption.
04
Public & Community Nutrition Infrastructure
How public and community systems provide or facilitate access to nutritious food through schools, community facilities, meal programmes and other shared infrastructure.
05
Food Environment & Choice Architecture
How urban retail, commercial and regulatory environments shape what food people encounter, choose and consume.
06
Food Culture & Social Nutrition
How urban environments and community structures shape the social and cultural dimensions of eating, including shared meals, communal food practices and local food culture.
Movement
Movement examines how the structure, design and connectivity of cities shape people’s ability to move through everyday life. It encompasses walking and active mobility, public and multimodal transport, opportunities for physical activity, inclusive access to the city, and the proximity between people and the destinations, services and activities that form part of daily life.
5
Urban Domains
01
Walkability & Pedestrian Mobility
How urban form, street design and human-scale mobility infrastructure enable safe, convenient and practical active movement as part of everyday urban life.
02
Public Transport & Multimodal Mobility
How public transport and connections between mobility modes enable efficient movement through the city while reducing dependence on private cars.
03
Recreation & Physical Activity Infrastructure
How parks, sports facilities, trails, public spaces and other urban infrastructure create accessible opportunities for physical activity and recreation.
04
Accessibility & Inclusive Mobility
How urban environments and mobility systems enable people of different ages, abilities and circumstances to move through and access the city.
05
Proximity & Urban Form
How density, mixed-use development and the spatial distribution of everyday destinations enable movement to become naturally embedded in daily life.
Knowledge
Knowledge examines how cities enable people to access, develop and use knowledge throughout their lives. It encompasses access to formal education, opportunities for lifelong learning and skill development, public learning infrastructure, participation in the digital knowledge environment, and people’s ability to access, understand and effectively use information.
5
Urban Domains
01
Education Access & Opportunity
How urban conditions shape equitable access to formal education, including schools, vocational education and higher education.
02
Lifelong Learning & Skill Development
How cities enable people to continue learning, developing capabilities and adapting their skills throughout life.
03
Public Knowledge & Learning Infrastructure
How libraries, museums, cultural institutions and other public learning spaces provide access to knowledge beyond formal education.
04
Digital Access & Capability
How digital infrastructure, affordability and digital capabilities enable people to access and participate in the modern knowledge environment.
05
Information Accessibility & Literacy
How urban systems enable people to find, understand, evaluate and effectively use information relevant to their lives and communities.
Mindset
Mindset examines how the conditions and experiences of urban life shape psychological wellbeing and people’s relationship with themselves, others and their surroundings. It encompasses access to mental health support, opportunities for social connection and belonging, the psychological burden created or reduced by urban conditions, and the safety and trust through which people experience everyday life.
4
Urban Domains
01
Mental Health & Psychological Support
How urban systems and community infrastructure enable accessible support for mental health and psychological wellbeing.
02
Social Connection & Belonging
How neighbourhoods, public spaces and community structures enable social connection, inclusion, supportive relationships and a sense of belonging.
03
Stress & Urban Psychological Burden
How the conditions and demands of urban life accumulate to increase or reduce chronic stress and psychological burden.
04
Safety, Trust & Psychological Security
How actual and perceived safety, trust in one's surroundings and the experience of urban environments shape people's sense of security and psychological wellbeing.
Environment
Environment examines the physical conditions in which urban life takes place and how those conditions shape human health, wellbeing and everyday experience. It encompasses physical safety, housing and residential conditions, environmental exposures, access to nature, the quality of public space, and the climatic and thermal conditions to which people are exposed across the urban environment.
6
Urban Domains
01
Safety & Physical Security
How the built environment, infrastructure and public realm protect people from injury, hazards and physical harm in everyday urban life.
02
Housing & Residential Environment
How housing quality, stability, space and residential conditions shape people's health, wellbeing and everyday living environment.
03
Environmental Quality & Exposure
How air quality, noise, pollution and other environmental exposures within the city protect or undermine human health and wellbeing.
04
Green & Natural Environment
How access to nature, green space, vegetation and natural systems contributes to healthier, restorative and more liveable urban environments.
05
Public Space & Urban Realm
How the design, quality, accessibility and maintenance of shared urban environments shape people's everyday experience of the physical city.
06
Climate & Thermal Environment
How urban design and environmental conditions shape people's exposure and adaptation to heat, cold, weather and other climatic pressures.
Human flourishing does not emerge from any single pillar.
The Five Pillars represent interconnected dimensions of urban life. The same urban environment, system or intervention may influence several pillars simultaneously. Human Flourishing within Urban OS should therefore be understood as an integrated system rather than five independent areas of urban development.
