G.O.A.L. Urban OS 2040 is G.O.A.L.’s flagship long-term Research & Development programme.
Its mission is to unite the knowledge, expertise and organizations required to co-develop and realize the next generation of human-centred urban development.
Rather than approaching cities through separate disciplines, Urban OS 2040 explores how Human Flourishing, Family Formation and Urban AI can be integrated into a shared conceptual foundation for future urban environments.
Why Urban OS 2040
Cities are shaped by countless interconnected systems, from housing and mobility to healthcare, technology, governance and the economy. Although each continues to evolve independently, the interaction between these systems ultimately determines how people experience urban life.
Urban OS 2040 explores a different approach.
Instead of beginning with sectors, it begins with people.
The programme asks a simple but fundamental question:
What would an urban operating system look like if it were designed around the conditions required for human flourishing?
Conceptual Architecture
Urban OS 2040 is built upon G.O.A.L.'s three strategic R&D areas. Together, they form the conceptual architecture from which the Urban OS 2040 is progressively developed.
A Collaborative Programme
Urban OS 2040 is not intended to become a fixed masterplan or a city designed by a single organization.
No single organization possesses all the expertise required to design the next generation of human-centred urban development.
Instead, Urban OS 2040 is conceived as a collaborative Research & Development programme that brings together municipalities, universities, research institutes, architects, planners, developers, technology companies, international organizations and other strategic contributors.
By combining diverse expertise within a shared long-term programme, Urban OS 2040 seeks to progressively develop an integrated conceptual foundation capable of informing future urban development.
G.O.A.L.’s Role
As the initiator of Urban OS 2040, G.O.A.L. serves as the programme’s Programme Lead and Systems Integrator.
The institute develops the programme’s conceptual foundations, coordinates interdisciplinary collaboration and integrates contributions from participating organizations into a coherent long-term Research & Development effort.
Rather than attempting to solve every challenge itself, G.O.A.L. provides the structure through which expertise from many disciplines can be brought together to collectively advance Urban OS 2040.
